FH6, the long races

The Colossus

I set the drivatars to Average and ended up in last place, overtaking a couple of the drivatars and merely getting 9th in visual range. Nothing I tried was effective, and the few place where the AI had to slow down didn’t help because I was never close enough to make a move on them.

I repeated the race with the drivatars on Tourist and obviously won the race, but at what level would I get a fair race?

I feel the Colossus has issues. In FH4, it was a slightly longer sprint race of about five to six minutes. A bit technical, but that was a good thing. I liked it in winter because it was mostly clear of snow. In FH5, the Colossus was too long to be a fun diversion, and I largely ignored it. In FH6, it’s merely a high-sped circuit with an occasional tighter turn. Because the track covers the whole width of the course, I don’t know what a good line might be. It’s clear there are alt. paths to take, but to what extent they might help, I don’t know as of yet and may never do.

Verdict: boring.

The Titan

I left the drivatars on Tourist just in case. This was yet another cross-country race that’s full of jumps which, I aver, are often unnecessary and annoying.

Verdict: not a bad course overall, but I doubt whether this will be my default cross-country race as it was in FH5.

The Gauntlet

In spite of doing this in a very slidey, stock Porsche 911 Rallye, I could and should probably have put the drivatar back to Average. I need to do this in a proper built rally car, but wasn’t much enamoured of the turn-one-at-Monza philosophy in a lot of sections. As ever, there’s a fair amount of tarmac as well.

Verdict: all right, but the design philosophy (zigzag, zigzag) leaves something to be desired.

The Goliath

Extreme Track Toys. My best choice from a very limited range was the FXX K Evo. On my first attempt, the drivatars were clearly in the mood for a repeat screening of the Colossus – with shoving. I went off at turn one, but had gone in too fast. Restarted and managed to take the lead fairly early on. The biggest nuisance was some drift truck that shouldn’t have been a nuisance at all, but I managed to hold it off and eventually take a decent lead finishing in 24:04.824 (which I predicted at the halfway mark).

The touge sections are a major pain. I eventually developed the strategy of dropping to 2nd for the turn, straightening up at the start of the next straight, and immediately banging it into 3rd to try and stop the car from sliding all over the place.

Verdict: far more interesting than the Colossus in FH6, but resembling the Colossus in FH5 bent into a circuit. Not well suited to really fast cars, especially in the more technical sections. Unlike FH4 in which I did the Goliath a lot and FH5 in which I eventually did it a bit more, I can’t see myself doing this race all that often.

Overall, the game currently lacks an FH4 or 5 Goliath where the hypercars and extreme track toys can be properly unleashed. I assume the Colossus is meant to be the race for the more overpowered cars, but it doesn’t really test their handling.
